The issue with "no init file found for database ..." is typically observed if you are working with Oracle 9i and spfile only ( no init file ) - the dbstart script doesn't recognize it correctly, opposite to 10g ( here is corrected version of dbstart ). You can modify the dbstart script accordingly if this apply ( i am not sure which version of Oracle are you running ).
