Thanks for the response;
When I try to connect to RMAN as sysdba, I get the following message;

RMAN-00579: the following error occurred at 10/03/2005 10:46:01
RMAN-00554: initialization of internal recovery manager package failed
RMAN-04005: error from target database: ORA-01031: insufficient
privileges

I'm not sure what you mean about not being a part of the local ora_dba group as I don't have a local group like that on my machine. It's been over a year since I took my DBA Fundamentals 1 and 2 for Oracle 9 and I haven't really used it since....

Here is the exact error message from the alert log that I'm trying to fix;

ORA-1092 signalled during: ALTER DATABASE OPEN...
