Who said anything about "exam cram"?  Not me.  My point is that those
that study on their own and then take the test generally have a better
understanding of the basic building blocks of being a good DBA.  I
studied on my own after being a DBA for 12 years.  The company I worked
for had several layoffs.  After the last one, they gave all DBA's a
goal of becoming certified.  This goal was part of each individuals
performance review, i.e. if you don't accomplish the goal, your score
suffers.  (I eventually quit that company because of this and other
policies).  So I was more or less forced to get certified.  I found out
that I benefited a great deal from studying.
