I'd say, go for a development job first, by the time you have enough experience things may be completely different anyways. Being the only developer with DBA smarts on a team doesn't hurt - you can get a lot of that from Tom Kyte's books. I think the SQL server comment was sarcasm.

You can get some idea of salary from salary.com, but it could be a bit starry-eyed.

The cost-of-living argument has become determinative. Where I live (southern Kalifornia) $100K/yr isn't enough to afford a decent house (1% teaser loans notwithstanding). But if you can figure out how to live in a nice cheap place at expensive place wages, that can work (that is what I used to do, but the cheap place caught up and is now expensive. But I'd still have to downsize to get rid of the commute to where the jobs are, and that would be silly). There are a few travelling DBA jobs, but you gotta know your stuff, or at least talk a good game.
