PMFJI, but I just noticed that you mentioned having the binaries installed at oracle/sid/920_64/bin. That 'sid' directory implies (to me) that you are installing binaries for each sid/database. I have inherited a system like that (and don't like it), and there has been some discussion here in the past if that is good practice. Be that as it may, given your trying to grasp the relationships, I'd just like to point out and reinforce that only one set of binaries is NEEDED. And if you install them into a directory structure that implies otherwise, it just leads to more confusion. It's really a simple concept. You don't install multiple copies of Word binaries to handle multiple Word docs. You don't install multiple copies of Excel binaries to handle multiple spreadsheets. And you don't need to install multiple copies of Oracle binaries to handle multiple Oracle databases. I'd suggest some additional reading on Oracle Flexible Architecture.
