Yes, if you expect to become a proficient Oracle DBA. SQL is what runs inside the database.
If/when the SQL is inefficient, the application is SLOW. PL/SQL is Oracle's proprietary procedural language that runs inside the DB. You'll also need know a scripting language that works at the OS level, but can also interoperate with the DB.
The majority of the larger Oracle databases run on *nix.

As a DBA you will be expected to at least identify the root cause of performance problems; regardless of their origin. System Administrators will claim the source of the slow response is due to the DB. If you can not PROVE they are in error (assuming they are wrong), then PHB's will consider you incompetent because the problem will remain.

To get a job as an Oracle DBA, yes.

Go search DICE.COM or MONSTER.COM for Oracle DBA postings. Educate yourself regarding what companies expect regarding EXPERIENCE. Don't take my word for it. Go & see for yourself.

Yes, it is a Catch-22.
You can not get a DBA job without experience. You can not get experience without a job.

The reality is the majority of DBA started their work experience in some other position. Many started as a programmer/developer. Others started as computer System Administrators. Only after they proved their skill levels were they given a chance at becoming a junior DBA.

Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear, but it is reality. Received on Sat Aug 13 2005 - 18:50:23 CDT
