Me again.  I'd hate to leave an erroneous solution out here.  I came
across the correct solution in Metalink.  The real fix is that no entry
in tnsnames.ora should have the last right parenthesis at the begining
of the line.  Out of my 40+ entries in tnsnames.ora, one had the final
right parenthesis at the beginning of the line - I spaced it over by
one and everything works.
