ASM setup of shared disks for RAC

It appears that ASM performs functions that a RAID normally performs.
So if you have 6 disks in a shared network storage device, should one
configure this is as 6 different drives and let ASM handle the
mirroring, etc. or set up a RAID to create one highly available disk
volume for use in ASM?
