I figured it out. my 8.1 tnsnames had the wrong port for the entry. I
can now connect as I had expected to.



Now I have a new problem::



RMAN-06429: TARGET database is not compatible with this version of RMAN



BUGGER!!! ;-)


So does this mean I can't have one central RMAN repository for dbs of
varying versions?
