John, an x86 machine uses Little Endian format. If sparc is Big Endian then you have a problem.

Even if both machines use the same bit ordering format Oracle does not officially support moving datafiles between non-compatiable hardware till 10g and only via rman.

Use exp, binary FTP, imp and call it a day.
