I would never suggest that anyone can be a DBA on a UNIX platform without knowing UNIX, but there is a big difference between knowing UNIX and working as a UNIX admin for 3 years.
Obviously, working as a UNIX admin for 3 years helps, but it is not required, and someone without that should not be discouraged from choosing a career as a DBA who does not have that experience.
