Hi experts,

indulge me in this scenario:

as part of our backup strategy we take a copy of our dbf files (data, undo, indx01 etc etc), together with the various *.ora files (init, spfile, listener etc etc), the *.ctl file and the archive logs.

say i have a situation where my software instance of the Oracle database is ruined and i need to format my server, reinstall Oracle and recreate my database. recreating is easy enough,

BUT.... how do i make my old dbf files (and the data they contain) visible in the new database?

what we have:

step by step instructions (or a link to step by step instructions) for this would be gratefully received.
