I would think we can do better than just say read the manual. One place where Information on locks can be found is in the (version 9.2) Application Developers Guide - Fundamentals, Ch 7, How Oracle Processes SQL Statements under sections topics: Locking Data Explicitly, Explicitly Acquiring Row Locks, and Letting Oracle Control Table Locking. Also look up v$lock in the Oracle version# Reference Manual.

This should provide a start.
