I logged a call with Oracle - it turned out to be a bug with gather
stats with AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE on tables with heaviliy skewed data.



So your advice to use 'FOR ALL INDEXED COLUMNS' would probably have
helped, but gathering histograms is not practical for our whole schema.
 Oracle support have recommended us to do a 20% estimate, and this
fixes the problem.
