Of course that does happen, and you can be forced to do so. My department is forced to execute a 'fail over test' by means of a *cold backup* (being brought by courier to the other location) because the 3rd party developers state this is the only safe method.

Mind you, this is Oracle 9i Enterprise Edition!!
