Well, it looks like I am going to have to go the 'correct' route and
poll the data dictionary after all.  The version displayed by SQL*Plus
in earlier versions of Oracle is the SQL*Plus version, not the DB...
and not all /etc/oratab versions contain the string.  Thanks all for
the help though; appreciated.
