Wild guess: Set shmmax down to something like your swap size or memory size. Likely something wrong with some shared memory parameter, I know some unix don't like to allocate memory segments bigger than is in swap.

Also, try creating your database manually, and be sure ipcs doesn't show some retarded previous try of creating the database still using your memory. (An issue on earlier Solaris, don't know about yours).
