Well, it turns out that the Oracle ODBC driver was the problem.
Switched to Microsoft ODBC driver and the problems disappeared.  Tried
a different Oracle ODBC driver and that worked, too.  Looks like Oracle
had a problem with it's own driver in this case...  Very strange
behavior indeed.
