Yes.

There are tremendous advantages in setup, configuration, peformance, and scalability from following Oracle's recommendations. How much depends on your hardware, application, and usage.

But given the low cost of a node these day ... trying to save a few thousand dollars makes no sense. You just spend the same money, or more, on manpower.
