Why do you keep on saying that? Rman will of course apply the online redologs if

a) available
b) not corrupted
c) the content of the controlfile indicates that applying the redologs

    is in order
d) you're doing a full recovery (or incomplete, but up to a time not in the

    archived logs)

Learn what a SCN is. Learn where it's stored. Learn what's in the control file. Describe the desaster scenario to its full extend (what is lost, how is restore/recovery done). Read what has been written in this thread. Correct your statement from above.

Of course there are situations when online redologs can't or shouldn't be applied. Of course there are situations when online redologs can't be automatically applied.

But they depend on a certain situation / requirement. Your generalization is plain wrong.
