I should have mentioned that we are already running NOARCHIVELOG. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to prevent the initial generation of redo (even though it is overwritten at log switches).

That's what Oracle Tech Support is suggesting. I agree with you and them that nothing we do in Oracle should "crater" the O/S. Since the Oracle import is the only activity on the box at the time, we thought we'd start with Oracle as the potential problem.
