Look at Oracle's document: "OracleŽ Database JDBC Developer's Guide and Reference" - especially the 10g version (and recommend you use 10g's thn driver)

Specifically, in the document, look at Section 1.3, which gives an overview of your problem and directs you to sections that expand the answer.

(heard at a recent lecture: It's perhaps the silliest concept around - using documentation to try to resolve a problem!) <g>
