Yes.

You may opt not to use a repository ("RMAN database"). Also, the version of RMAN should match the highest version of the databases you are planning to backup using RMAN; e.g. you have 8i, 9iR2 and 10.0.3, use RMAN 10.0.3, and a repository on 10.0.3
