Neither. It is an analogy that might help someone understand the mechanism.
Since you are digging deep into ASM (deeper than most non-Oracle people I've seen, aside from myself), you might consider asking Oracle's presales to come out and have an indepth discussion with you. They *might* even be able to get product management involved.
