If the data is stored on two different nodes then by definition wouldn't you need two different databases?

The term "vertical fragments" does not appear in the Oracle 9.2 or 10g documentation. You would probably need to check your school reference text for exceptable definitions.

The 10g DBA Administration manual has a section devoted to distributed databases and queries. You may wish to refer to it.
