All oracle needs to install is ORACLE_HOME defined. ORACLE_SID isnt required because there is no database yet so why would it need in instance identifier? (A SID is associated with a set of files that make up a database, your current task is to install the binaries which are the framework that mounts and opens a database) Also dispell the rumor of a needed oinstall group as well.

So if you have your oracle home location created (/u01/app/oracle/product/<version>) and owned by the user you intend to install under, define ORACLE_HOME and fire up the installer. Ive been doing it this way for 10+ years from every version of oracle from 7.3.4 -> 10.1.0.3. Received on Thu Mar 10 2005 - 08:44:19 CST
