No - you don't *need* nocatalog, if you insist, you can use a catalog. The use, or non-use, of a catalog has nothing to do with RMAN's capabilities to create full backups. If there's no catalog, it will use the controlfile(s) of the backed up instance.

I do hope, you did not ask this, because the catalog is in the instance your try to backup?!? Bad idea. Use cold (nocatalog) backups if even files system copies for backing up the -closed, shut down- catalog database.
