I don't know about Veritas, but Tivoli allows you to backup your data via Rman directly to the backup server, so you're not duplicating your data on disk, and the same goes for the restore. If you're backing up LOTS of data, this is an important feature.

(Then again, if you're backing upTerabytes of data, you're better off doing a double mirror, and breaking one mirror and backing up that image, rather than sucking up your database time extracting each individual page, but that's another story.)
