AIX is a solid implementation of UNIX and is normally ran on IBM's own Power PC chip set while Linux is 'normally' set on an Intel compatiable chip set.

You generally have access to more powerful boxes when you leave the Intel line and go to HP, IBM, or Sun.

You can get Linux on the mainframe but the great majority of Linux systems are Intel based and on fairly small boxes.

Also the current versions of Linux do not scale to high cpu count machines as well as UNIX. I think improving the scaling was one of the major drivers behind the most recent version of Linux.

So there is a possibility that the choice may have to due with box capacity. Then again you do not lose your job for chosing to put mission critical systems on IBM platforms.
