your 'e right there wasn't much information to go on. I am normally Tier3 Windows support, our Oracle DBA is off ill and I have this problem to try and sort out.

Current 8.17 database is running on Windows 2000 I can connect to this by from SQLPLUS using the / and entering the instance name. I think that this is using the basic OS authentication and this user is external to Oracle.

This 8.17 database has been upgraded to 9.2 doing the same as above get invalid username or password. To all intents and purpose it looks like this is correct and that Oracle is behaving as it should, if you look at the actual databases on the server, they seem ok. It's just that the old app's cannot talk to it. We have not upgraded the client side of things, we have left this at 8.17 and put the 9.2 database into compatibility mode.
