In a true distribued database system each database must be at the same point in time. If a recovery of one database is required to any point in time behind the rest of the system the entire system (all databases) will need to be recovered to the same point in time or else the system will be in an inconsistent state.

As long as hot/online backups are in use the actual backups do not have to be made at the same time so long as the archived redo logs are retained so that forward recovery from a prior backup to the target point in time can be accomplished for each database in the distributed system.
