it depends.

what versions of Oracle Database Server software are you running? what volume manager software (if any) are you currently using?

one could consider using 10g ASM, in which case you could just turn over the disks to Oracle - or could create mirrored sets and turn those RAID 1 volumes over to Oracle.

If you prefer to stage backups on local storage and push/pull backup sets to elsewhere on the network, then you'll have to take that into account prior to dedicating the disks or LUNs to ASM.

if we all had adequate testing equipment and time to test different configurations, this would be a non-issue. most people use a best guess^H^H^H^H^H practice and hope its good enough.
