Major releases of Oracle involve the installation of completely new binaries so even if you started with version 7 and upgraded to 8 and then to 9 you have the version 9 binaries installed.

Log onto the instance and read the SQLPlus logon information. Then query the dictionary view, product_component_version.

This will tell you what version of Oracle you are currently running no matter what versions were initially installed.
