But, the previous discussion in this thread suggests that a database-specific level (the "db_1" directory, in this example) in the Oracle home directory is entirely unnecessary in the first place.

That's one of the things I was confused about. What purpose is served by the "<some-database-specific-name>" level in the Oracle Home Directory path?

Based on the comments of the Oracle Jedi Masters, I am now understanding that it is superfluous.
