I had found the "Concepts" manual, but put it aside for later when I had time to read 600 pages, or whatever size it is. :-)

However, the glossary was very helpful in clarifying "database" and "instance".

But that still leaves me wondering why the Oracle Installation Guide suggests "db_1" be included in the Oracle home directory. For example, the Installation Guide suggests the following as the Oracle home directory: "${ORACLE_BASE}/product/10.1.0/db_1"

What am I missing?
