My advice to my students is if you are not working find volunteer work with a non-profit/charity immediately. It not only gives you experience it gives you references. And it is better to be working somewhere than not.

If you have a job ... try to modify your hours to work 4x10 or some other schedule that frees up one day per week. And again ... find somewhere that takes volunteers and/or interns.

A student of mine two years ago was a classic example of how this can really pay off. She took an internship with Matsushita Avionics in Bothell, Washington. Less than a year later was hired by Siebel and relocated to Japan making 4X her previous income.
