Horse for courses, boss.
The products above can backup and recover a database of virtually any size in a matter of seconds (not minutes). Oracle's RMAN can do it in an hour or so for Tb-class databases. So there is a difference. Some sites can't afford a stoppage of one hour. They'll continue to use the other products.

Oracle has benefited tremendously from spending the last 4 or 5 years in close development with Veritas. This has resulted (of late) in Oracle offering a solution that is almost there but at a better TCO, while Veritas and others are still needed for the top of the line performance. Oracle also does I/O with Vxfs in a much more efficient way than the traditional fs I/O request and that has a big impact on sites with huge I/O demand (yes, there are still a few left, it's not all just shopping carts...).

So if you need it, you'll have to pay for it. If not, then just use the slower (although still fast) in-built mechanism in 10g. In other words: nothing changed. Received on Thu Nov 25 2004 - 04:42:28 CST
