Not my point. I just said bigger datafiles don't make recovery much slower. Not with the current hardware anyway. There may be other reasons to stick with small files (maybe i/o serialization or backup speed you mentioned) but recovery speed is not one of them.

Rman to disk and to the tapes after that? Why not but with rather high disk space requirements could be better to buy some more disks and do split-mirror backups.
