In terms of absolute votes Bush won the most ever, followed in order by Kerry, Gore and Bush in 2000 -- this is predominately a population-driven phenomenon.

He's the first president since Reagan to win more than 50% of the popular vote. It should be noted here though, that there was no significant 3rd candidate such as Perot or Nader in 2000.

He had the 2nd narrowest victory ever in the electoral college, with the narrowest margin having been won by Bush in 2000.

All in all it was a clear win, but nothing particularly remarkable by historical standards.
