Perhaps it would help if you start a bit of reading at http://tahiti.oracle.com. Pick your database version and go to the 'list of books'. The Net Services Administrators Guide and the Net Services Reference Guide are of interest for you. Skip Oracle Names Server, Directory usage, Connection Manager for the moment and focus on the 'local naming' method, (which is what you use) and try to understand what a net service name is.
