http://www.cs.fit.edu/~ryan/ada/ada-hist.html says PL/1 among others could have been a good starting point for ada, although http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~jeffw/misc-crap/unix-history/perso.wanadoo.fr/levenez/lang/history.html#04 recognizes the primacy of (drum roll, please) pascal :)
