My problems continued for a further 24 hours of pain and heartache - and have only just been resolved by completely scratching my first install and re-starting the whole installation process again - this time picking a database name of LESS than 8 characters... it seems that the whole problem has come down to the oracle9i installer corrupting some filenames by truncating them in some places to 7 characters ... my initial database name was "ORACLE9i" ... 8 characters. You'd think... 8 characters!.. computers!... wouldn't you.

Anyway - it looks much more healthy with a five character name. Nice one oracle.
