Never been fired for not toeing the party line before? Ever had a manager dismiss you for "poor performance" only because he didn't like you? Ever been replaced by a kid fresh out of high school simply because he was willing to work on call at all hours for 1/2 the pay, who in turn gets replaced by another kid just because he dared ask for a 50 cents an hour raise?

It's happened, and happens time and again. It's not the union per se that is the problem, it is the people that run them, and the people that oppose them. Each is trying to get the better deal (or screw them, as the case may be), so everyone loses in the end.
