Hi Howard

Mhmm... at least on my Linux box if I stop (SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE) the ASM instance the other instance is immediately stopped as well! Then, in the ALERT.LOG, I have the following information:

Errors in file /u00/app/oracle/admin/ASM1010/bdump/asm1010_asmb_12847.trc: ORA-15064: communication failure with ASM instance ORA-01089: immediate shutdown in progress - no operations are permitted Thu Sep 16 17:00:40 2004
ASMB: terminating instance due to error 15064 Instance terminated by ASMB, pid = 12847
