In case you missed, my humble article "Oracle Regular Expressions" at http://rootshell.be/~yong321/computer/OracleRegExp.html has a summary of using owa_pattern package and lists pointers to other approaches. Since you mention Oracle8 and above, don't forget the powerful regexp engine in 10g.
