No documents that I know of. Just that either is acceptable, but commonsense suggests going to the latest supported version on the grounds that it has a longer supported life ahead of it.

An upgrade to 10g is possible from 8.0.6, 8.1.7, 9.0.1 and 9.2.0, so provided you've got one of those versions, the direct leap to 10g is do-able. If you're stuck on, say, 8.1.6, then you'll have to step that up to, say, 8.1.7 before the leap to 10g is possible.
