Good DBA practices are very, very similar to good System Administration practices which simply good IT practices.

1a) Maximize system availability & data integrity 1b) Minimize nasty surprises which impact (1a) above.

Anything that can be done to drive the organiztion towards either of these two goals does more good than harm, generally.

As was said before, "It depends".
