You don't apply archive logs in a cold backup. You apply archives during a recovery.

The temperature of your backups makes no difference as to how one recovers a database. So you'd perform a recovery precisely as anyone else would: restore the file or files which are actually in need of restoration, and then issue recover database or recover datafile commands.

If I've missed your point, re-ask the question in a more specific form.
