Are these the only options?

why not check other options as well: RAID0 -- RAID10 ( a mirror of stripes) and perhaps stripe of mirrors (available in Veritas products).

The fact remains: nothing is really bad! RAID4/5 can use large cache to manage optimized writes (many would write to the same disk zone; and perhaps the same disk tracks)
