No, because you can create a control file from the nomount. But as you now know from everyone's posts, it is far more than nice-to-have to do the backup to trace, and it is critical to understand the control file and redo log concepts, and to practice the various scenarios. As others have mentioned, it is worthwhile to google hjr's cdos posts.

It is possible to run without a catalog, perhaps even preferable for small sites, but you are giving up a lot of functionality and have to deal with what is left.
